As Bert Jones matured the Colts featured one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. From 1976 through 1977 Jones ascended, as one of the National Football League's premiere quarterbacks. In 1977, Jones lead the league in completions, was second in passing yards, while ranking fifth overall in touchdown passes. His 1976 season is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of the NFL.
With the rocket armed, fearlessly commanding, and intelligent Jones at the helm, the Colts became legitimate contenders. This all came crashing down when Jones was injured in the final preseason game of the 1978 season by Detroit defensive lineman Al "Bubba" Baker. After missing some time, Jones came back for an October affair against the rival Jets. As fate would have it Jones would re-injure his shoulder in that game.
The ailing Colts, foundering without their leader, found some relief when Jones entered the starting lineup three weeks later in a Monday Night tilt with Washington. Jones would successfully guide the Colts to victory off of three touchdown passes, but along the way, he re-aggravated the wounded shoulder. Miraculously, Jones played through the pain that one spectacular Monday night- it was a glorious moment in an otherwise troubling time for Jones and the Baltimore Colts. A week later Jones was forced to exit the game yet again as his injured shoulder shot with unrelenting pain.
I will tell you what. You have to give it up to a guy that comes off the bench with marks he has and plays the way he plays. Bill Troup is a leader of men whether we want to accept it or not (ahem Bert Jones). The man simply shines on the big stage. Once Bill Troup broke the single game passing yard record it was only a small step toward winning the Week 6 offensive player of the week award. It is here that we bow in awe to this accomplishment.
Bill Troup is every positive football cliche rolled into one, even defensive ones. Bill Troup, in one fell swoop, inspired an entire fan base, got the Colt`s season back on track with a stunning overtime win against the previously undefeated Broncos; a team that has lost once all season....to....Bill Troup, and let us not forget Troup reviving the old 90`s classic, Tag Team`s `Whoomp (There It Is)`. Troup`s version is already being called the best spin off of the song since the Addam`s Family rendition. If Bert Jones hadn`t been so stingy with the starting QB position in Baltimore, Bill Troup would surely have a `Football Life` special on the NFL network. Bill Troup is a rich man`s Don Strock- both were content as back ups, playing for one team for most of their career, but we know darn well what would have happened if Bill Troup became a full time starting QB. Once again, ladies and gents, let us tip our hats and brews back for the one and only Bill Troup, a once and a lifetime character.
